A python swallowed a Woman in Indonesia.

The case of pythons swallowing humans has occurred again in Indonesia.  This time the victim was a woman named Jahrah, a resident of West Tanjungjabung Regency, Jambi Province.
The incident began when the 52-year-old woman went to the garden to tap rubber on Sunday (23/10).

However, until the afternoon he did not return home which was later reported missing after being searched for by his family and residents.

"The victim went to his garden to tap rubber, but as of 18.00 WIB the victim had not returned to his house, so the husband took the victim to the garden location and was unable to find the victim," said Betara Jambi Sector Police Chief, AKP S Harefa, as reported by detik.com  , Wednesday (10/26/2022).
When they arrived at the location, Jahrah's husband only found sandals, a knife, a headscarf, and Jahrah's jacket.  Later, Jahrah's husband reported the incident to the Elephant Falls Village to ask for help in finding his wife.
The local community then conducted a search for Jahrah in the rubber plantation.

The next day, at around 09.00 WIB, they found something odd about a seven-meter-long python.

"We have been searching since Sunday night and after we continued our search today, the community saw and found a large python in the bushes of the residents' plantations," said the Head of the Elephant Falls Village, Anton, on Monday (24/10), as quoted by Antara.  quoted by Antara news agency.

Birin, a local resident, admitted that the community acted because they were suspicious of the appearance of the python.
"The snake was caught and then killed by residents. Because they suspected that it had a large stomach, it was dissected. There we found the body of Ms. Zahara," Birin told Kompas.com.

Birin explained that when he was found Jahrah was already dead.  No one saw him being swallowed by a snake, because he was tapping the rubber alone.

The body of the late Jahrah is still intact, presumably because the new victim was preyed upon by the snake.

"The victim's body was also not destroyed when it was found inside the snake's body, because it was suspected that it had just been preyed on," explained Betara Jambi Police Chief, AKP S Harefa.

After being found by residents, Jahrah's body was immediately taken to the funeral home.  The victim has also been buried at the local TPU.

The umpteenth case of a python swallowing a human in Indonesia

The incident that happened to the late Jahrah was the umpteenth case of a python swallowing a human in Indonesia.

In 2017, a python or reticulated python with a length of up to seven meters in Salubiro Village, Karossa, Central Mamuju, West Sulawesi, reportedly preyed on an oil palm farmer in the village.

In 2018, a 54-year-old woman in Muna, Southeast Sulawesi, was found in the body of a seven-meter-long python.
So far, the snake that swallows humans, in Indonesia, is of the same type, the reticulated python (Python reticulatus), according to Herna Hadi Prasetyo, from the snake handling agency, Sioux Indonesia.

This type of snake is found in almost all parts of Indonesia, except in Papua.

They prey on large mammals, which can be 10 times the size of their mouths, Herna said.
Pythons were eaten by residents in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province, in 2017.

The python or flower python (Python reticulatus) is a very strong snake.

They immobilize an opponent or prey by entangling them, and crushing them, killing them to suffocation or suffering a heart attack.

But eating its prey is another matter.

Pythons don't chew their food, they have to swallow their prey whole.  Fortunately, their jaws are connected by a variety of very flexible ligaments, so that their jaws are able to stretch if they eat large prey.

"The limiting factor is the human shoulder blades because they can't be folded," Mary-Ruth Low, conservation & research officer at Wildlife Reserves Singapore and an expert on pythons told the BBC in an interview recently.

According to Herna, pythons usually wait at the top of the tree, then when their prey passes by, they will fall down and wrap themselves around them.

But once in a while they can have bad luck.  As experienced by a snake in Riau, last October: the person it attacks can fight back.
